How does finasteride work?

The hormone responsible for male pattern baldness is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is produced by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase when it interacts with testosterone. Finasteride operates by obstructing 5-alpha reductase's ability to convert testosterone to DHT. Lessing the product of DHT means less or no hair loss and possible re-growth.
